E46 M3 Oil Pump Failure. So i've noticed recently a few people mentioning replacing the oil pump when changing your rod bearings but i've never. That appears to be james' take on the problem. A clutch kit will finish the job. I suspect the primary factor of oil pump damage is from foreign objects entering the oil pump, not really them being worn out from. As per the rules, either weld the oil pump nut, or use safety wire to secure it. It is common for the smg pump to fail, which renders your e46 m3 useless. I have heard stories of the oil pumps nuts coming off and causing a failure. Someone mentioned it could be a failing oil pump or pickup tube, but the red oil light (oil pressure) has never appeared. Or, just get a zhp oil nut. For you smg owners, the smg pump was once a dreaded failure. We have handy gasket kits put together for the valve cover gasket and rear main seal, crankshaft, and oil pan gasket that will get you started.
